Heart and Soul of the Steelers Is Now a Dolphin

Joey Porter, the player who epitomized Pittsburgh Steelers football for eight years, is now a Miami Dolphin. For the price of $32 million, Porter signed a five-year contract with the Dolphins, where he’ll play outside linebacker with defensive player of the year Jason Taylor.
The Steelers decision to cut Porter instead of paying him a $5 million bonus is the first big move by new head coach Mike Tomlin. Given Tomlin’s expertise as a defensive coach, I find his decision to let Porter go a bit surprising — and demoralizing. The Steelers wouldn’t think of letting their leader on offense, Hines Ward, walk away. Why treat Joey Porter any differently?
It was bad enough Steelers fans had to adjust to an unfamiliar coach. Now we don’t have the defense’s inspirational leader.
