All Democrats Agree: Let’s Raise Taxes

In about an hour, House Democrats will hold a press conference on Capitol Hill to promote their “fiscally responsible” budget. (There’s no mention in the press advisory that the budget includes the largest tax increase in U.S. history — amounting to more than $2,600 per family.) Rep. Steny Hoyer, the House majority leader, and Rep. John Spratt, the Budget Committee chairman, will join Blue Dog members Rep. Allen Boyd (Fla.), Rep. Dennis Moore (Kansas), Rep. Michael Ross (Ark.) and Rep. Stephanie Herseth (S.D.).

Seizing the opportunity to cast light on the Democrats’ disastrous plan, the Republican Study Committee has compiled a breakdown of the massive tax increases in each of the alternative budgets submitted by the various factions of the Democrat caucus.

• Progressive Caucus Р$949.3 billion
• Congressional Black Caucus Р$711.9 billion
• Democrat Leadership Р$392.5 billion
• Rep. James Cooper (Blue Dog leader) Р$197.8 billion

As I wrote about yesterday, Rep. Paul Ryan and the House Republicans have put together their own alternative — one that tackles the problem of rising entitlement costs and also extends the Bush tax cuts.
