Tax-and-Spend Democrats Haven’t Changed

Republican members are starting to trickle in to the House Republican Conference bloggers’ event in the U.S. Capitol. Rep. Paul Ryan (R.-Wis.), ranking member of the Budget Committee, kicked off the event with a focus on the Democrats’ budget — the main theme today. Ryan’s committee has done a superb job breaking down the numbers, even securing a link on the Drudge Report yesterday.

“There’s a very fundamental difference in philosophy between our two parties,” said Ryan. “Democrats have clearly put tax increases as their top priority. We believe that Washington does not have a revenue problem. It has a spending problem.”

Rep. Adam Putnam (R.-Fla.), conference chairman, said Republicans are hosting the event today to spread that message to modern media. He cited the growing importance of bloggers in the political debate — particularly on issues of public policy.

The top priority at the moment for Republicans is shedding light on the Democrats’ budget. Ryan said their proposal is a clear sign that Democrats haven’t changed. Ryan said Democrats passed the largest tax increase in history before losing power in 1995 and are now trying to top even that accomplishment with a tax hike that would cost American families more than $2,600.
