Robert Novak has an excellent column today about Fred Thompson, who has surged into third place in opinion polls, ahead of both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich, who have typically occupied that spot. Thompson’s strong performance appears to be harming Romney most, but right now he’s pulling from everywhere.
The most interesting line in Novak’s piece is this one: “Buyer’s remorse is expressed by several House members who endorsed Romney, the former Massachusetts governor.” I never quite understood why so many House Republicans jumped on the Romney bandwagon so early. Now, with an electrifying candidate such as Thompson commanding attention, more than a few are probably wondering why they’re support a guy polling at 3%.
