Widgets and the Rightosphere

Posted by: Rob Bluey In: Conservatism| Technology

Earlier this week the Washington Post ran a story about the growing prominence of widgets — gadgets and gizmos that are becoming increasingly popular tools. I found it incredibly insightful. But it also got me thinking about how conservative bloggers could capitalize on these products on their websites.

Many bloggers are already incorporating widgets (myself included), but there’s much more that can be done. I’m curious to hear about examples of widgets geared toward political causes. If you know about any, please leave a comment or send me an e-mail.

While this may technically not qualify as a widget, I did want to call attention to a great new tool courtesy of Justin Hart at My Man Mitt. It allows Romney fans in New Hampshire to follow on an interactive Google map “where they’ve been, endorsements, fundraisers, headquarters and more.” Very cool.

UPDATE — April 12, 4:42 p.m.: Josue Sierra writes about Rudy Giuliani’s innovative fundraising tool that allows bloggers to embed into their website a widget for making a donation. Pretty sweet, especially since I just wrote about the GOP’s lackluster online fundraising. Kudos to Patrick Ruffini and his team at the Giuliani campaign. And speaking of Ruffini, he’s created this cool widget called “2008 Wire.”

As usual, the mainstream media is behind the times. Konfabulator has fallen off the radar with the Y! acquisition.

Check out yourminis.com for the next generation of widgets. It’s based on Adobe’s Apollo runtime, so there’s a seamless transition between web-based and desktop widgets.

Paul, you might want to try the 2008 Wire widget mentioned in the post. It also works seamlessly on the web and desktop – We invented it! :-)

Additionally, it’s a much smaller download than the Apollo product provided by Your Minis.

If you like, send me an email – I’ll personally give you a walk through of the product.
