Earmark Excuses

Sen. Jim DeMint delivered this brilliant speech on the Senate floor today, calling on Democrats to pass a resolution implementing the earmark rules they agreed to abide by earlier this year. Just before he spoke, Appropriations Chairman Robert Byrd promised to adopt those earmark transparency and reform provisions — a welcome move, but one that does nothing to ensure that earmarks in bills from other committees are treated the same way.
