Support the Troops: Wear Red on Fridays

Southwest Airlines is taking patriotism to a new level. My favorite airline has stepped to the forefront of the Red Fridays campaign, which encourages Americans to wear red on Fridays in a show of support for our troops.

This post on Southwest’s blog explains why the company has embraced the Red Fridays idea as a voluntary way of showing support. A spokeswoman for Southwest told me that at the height of the current conflict, Southwest had 173 employees called to serve, 79 of who remain on military leave. So now when you see a Southwest employee wearing a red shirt, you’ll know why.

There’s more information about the Red Fridays campaign at the Bluegrass Military Affairs Coalition. It makes an appeal to the “silent majority” whose opinions are ignored by the press. The Red Fridays idea is a great way of “showing solidarity and support for the troops with dignity and respect,” the organization says.

By word of mouth and example every Friday — Americans can make the United States a SEA OF RED, much like fans support their team at a homecoming football game. If every individual who supports the troops will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends and family, it will not be long before the USA is covered in RED ON FRIDAY to let our uniformed military members know that the once “silent majority” is in full support of the troops.

This sounds like a wonderful way for companies across American to show support for our troops. I know I’ll be wearing red this Friday. Will you have your red on?

This is an company all Americans can be proud of.
When will more Americans step up to the plate and act like Patriots?
Southwest is our family airline, they have always done things differently that is why they are so sucessful.

Nice idea. But this could be a problem when Autumn rolls around and high-school football teams take the field. My alma mater colors were blue and gold and our nemesis’ color was red. Wearing red of a friday was … um… not cool.

It’s a nice idea. My only objection is that it could turn into another red state/blue state partisan symbol. But I guess if you have to pick a color it may as well be red.

If you’re a Cincinnati Reds fan this worked out well.

Thanks for the line to Shelley’s blog post about Red on Fridays. We have actually been doing this for at least six months. You don’t need a calendar at our Headquarters Building to know that it is a Friday, all you need to see is the red.

This website sells red shirts with info on them; and the proceeds go towards sending personal hygiene and other items to troops in country.

Men and women are fighting this war for our freedom! We should be appreciative for our daily lives that we enjoy being safe and comfortable. My heart goes out to these men and women and there family members. As a family member myself of a United States Airforce Airman the support and love is always there, but the worring never goes far from my heart.I say show your support and let them be assured at all times that our support is real. The color RED is BOLD, and CONSTANT as our support should be!!
