Newt for Dinner

Newt Gingrich at Resource Bank, originally uploaded by Rob Bluey.
I’ve seen Newt Gingrich speak on several occasions — from the Human Events editorial board to a private fundraiser to large gatherings like tonight’s at Resource Bank. Of all of them, I found tonight’s one of the best speeches I’ve heard from the former House speaker.
Why? Gingrich was hopeful and optimist, and gave conservatives in the room specific solutions for communicating our ideas to the American people.
He also invoked stories about George Washington, a man who I regard as the greatest American ever. As a new member of the Friends of Mount Vernon, I’ve already been to Washington’s home twice this year. So when Gingrich told the story of the Battle of Trenton, I recalled the remarkable story told in “1776” and a new movie playing at Mount Vernon. Gingrich encouraged those in the room to invoke Washington’s name when conservatives criticize our current struggle in the War on Terror.
I could go on and on about the speech, but I won’t. I hope Gingrich posts the text on his website and circulates the video. At a time when conservatives need motivation, he delivered.
UPDATE — April 27, 12:25 a.m.: Mary Katharine Ham posts video of Gingrich’s speech on YouTube.
UPDATE — April 28, 2:08 p.m.: Gingrich’s communications director, Joe DeSantis, tells me that the speech was actually streamed live over the web. You can watch the whole thing on the American Solutions website.
