Bluey in The Hill: Give Bloggers Capitol Access

Posted by: Rob Bluey In: Clippings

As part of my association with the Open House Project, I’ve written an op-ed for The Hill calling for the creation of a congressional press gallery for bloggers. I’d call it the Online Media Gallery, and it would be responsible for setting the rules and overseeing the credentialing process for citizen journalists who cover Congress. My op-ed is part of a series in The Hill that will examine all the aspects of the Open House Project.

UPDATE — May 1, 4:18 p.m.: I’m beginning to get some positive feedback about this idea from my friends on the left and right. Matt Stoller weighs in at MyDD and former congressional staffer David All and Washington Examiner editorial page editor Mark Tapscott offer thier thoughts.

UPDATE — 10:07 p.m.: Marshall Manson says he’s on board with the idea. Check out his post at On Tap.

Mr. Bluey:

I am a liberal, and do not agree with much that you write. This is an exception. We must ensure that the current very slightly difficult climate does NOT result in the creation of a royalist, exclusionary legislature in which access to the workers in that legislature (senators and reps) are isolated and cut-off from their constituants.

In that vein, note that Dick Durbin and Barack Obama host, every Thurs at 8:30 AM, a breakfast for constituants. Of course, since they are in Washington, and I, like most residents of IL, am in IL, it’s hard to get there. Yet, it is an effort.

Just saw two helicopters flying over Thurmont, MD. I wonder if the Obamas are visiting Camp David?
