Sen. Daniel Akaka is once again pushing ahead with his infamous Native Hawaiian bill, which creates a race-based government in the United States. Conservatives have been able to kill the bill twice before, but this is the first time we’re dealing with a Democrat Congress.
Unfortunately, we suffered a setback yesterday in the House when the Natural Resources Committee approved the bill on a voice vote without any Republican opposition. We cannot let that happen in the Senate, which is holding a hearing this morning before the Indian Affairs Committee.
Here’s a list of five things that you can do right away to mobilize opposition to the bill.
1. Write about the bill. The more people read about it, the more likely they’re going to oppose it. Explain in plain, simple terms that this bill is the wrong approach at the wrong time. Thanks to the work of Sen. Jon Kyl (R.-Ariz.), we have a great primer on the dangers of it.
2. We need to devote our attention to the Senate. Encourage your readers to contact their senators. Call the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121 or click here for a complete list of senators.
3. Embarrass the Republican senators who have signed on as co-sponsors for the bill, especially those up for re-election in 2008: Norm Coleman (Minn.), Gordon Smith (Ore.) and Ted Stevens (Alaska). Other GOP senators to target are Thad Cochran (Miss.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Chuck Grassley (Iowa) and Arlen Specter (Pa.).
4. Ask President Bush to issue a veto threat. Write the White House or call at (202) 456-1111.
5. Offer links to information where people can learn more. The Heritage Foundation’s Native Hawaiian Resources page is a great place to start.
Bloggers played a major role derailing this bill last year. We need to do it again.
