Conservative Sen. John Cornyn (R.-Tex.) has offered an amendment to the immigration bill that would prohibit “members of terrorist-related organizations, known gang members, sex offenders, alien smugglers who use firearms and felony drunk drivers” from receiving benefits. Why these individuals would be allowed in the United States, let alone be given benefits, is just remarkable. (Hat tip to Captain Ed.)

I’m hearing that Senate conservatives are making a full-scale push to get the amendment adopted. It would settle some concerns conservatives have raised about the provisions in the amnesty title of the bill. However, Democrats are likely to resist because it addresses absconders — illegal immigrants who have been ordered by judges to be deported for breaking laws. They want absconders to be able to get amnesty.
