A lobbyist on Capitol Hill confirms that the White House and Senate Republican leaders Mitch McConnell (R.-Ky.) and Trent Lott (R.-Miss.) are working frantically to convince 15 Republican senators to support the immigration bill. I was provided a copy of the list of 15 targets.
The list includes Sen. Robert Bennett (Utah), Sen. Thad Cochran (Miss.), Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.), Sen. Susan Collins (Maine), Sen. Larry Craig (Idaho), Sen. Pete Domenici (N.M.), Sen. Judd Gregg (N.H.), Sen. Orrin Hatch (Utah), Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Tex.), Sen. Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Sen. Gordon Smith (Ore.), Sen. Olympia Snowe (Maine), Sen. Ted Stevens (Alaska) and Sen. John Warner (Va.).
Given the composition of this list, which differs from other versions I’ve seen, the White House appears resigned to the fact that it will not be able to convince conservatives to support the bill. The fact that many moderate Republicans make up this list should trouble amnesty opponents. Many of these senators are not conservatives and would have no problem selling out on immigration reform.
UPDATE — 11:52 p.m.: Michelle Malkin has the list as well, along with a note identifying who is up for re-election in 2008.
