Things are looking up for opponents of the amnesty bill. I was personally rejuvenated today after getting some good news from sources on Capitol Hill and reading news reports about the legislation.
Why are spirits a little brighter? There’s a coalition of groups coming together on the left and on the right in opposition to the bill. Add to that the fact that critics of the bill are determined to oppose it every step of the way, and trouble is clearly brewing. The decision of labor unions and Hispanic groups earlier this week to come out against the bill gives Democrats reason to vote against it. Meanwhile, the continued activism from conservative groups, led by Eagle Forum, has kept Republicans in line. Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R.-Ky.) is wavering.
Critics of the bill still have their work cut out for them. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-Nev.) has circumvented normal rules to stymie opponents. The American people rose up to defeat this bill once. Can they do it again? We’ll find out next week.
