It should’ve been a sweep. The Washington Nationals bounced back today against the Cleveland Indians after last night’s ninth-inning meltdown, but I’m still upset they let yesterday’s game get away. Missy and I were at the game with our friends Ehren and Erin and Mo and Mike.
With a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth, closer Chad Cordero (pictured above) gave up two singles and then a three-run homer to the Indians’ Victor Martinez. The Nats came back to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Jose Lopez bounced back to the pitcher, creating a force at home. Even worse, Nook Logan got caught coming around third and was picked off, ending the game with the Indians on top 4-3. It was a miserable ending, especially because we were there.
Cordero, when facing the same score today, 3-1, manged to hang on for the save. What’s so interesting is that manager Manny Acta told the Washington Post last night, “I want to be in the same position [Sunday] with a two-run lead and my closer on the mound in the ninth inning.” He got his wish. Fortunately, Cordero delivered. It’s too bad we weren’t there to see it.
