That’s how Sen. Jeff Sessions (R.-Ala.), a leading critic of the immigration bill, put it to the Washington Post. Some of the bill’s supporters, especially presidential contender John McCain, have the same feeling.
They’ll get there wish in about an hour when the Senate votes for cloture. Supporters of the bill need 60 votes to cut off debate. Opponents are cautiously optimistic that they’ll fall short of hitting that number. Michelle Malkin has the details. National Review analyzes the implications.
Meanwhile, senators aren’t staying quiet. Sen. Jim DeMint (R.-S.C.) is in a full-scale war with the White House. There’s video, too!
And Sen. Jim Inhofe (R.-Okla.) isn’t too far behind, offering a Secure Borders Now petition, creating a blog to tracking developments on immigration and releasing this video message.
If that wasn’t enough, even some of our friends on the left are joining the act. Bill Allison of the Sunlight Foundation has a provocative post on how inadequate lobbying disclosure rules have been exposed by the immigration fight.
In closing, I’ll leave you with this thought from Saul Anuzis, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party: “This is the greatest country in the world for a reason‚Ķand everyone is welcome‚Ķthat is who comes here for the American way of life. However, that has to mean legal, planned, patriotic immigration, based on a rule of law and not amnesty‚Ķespecially for the criminal elements and gang members that are here now.”
