Making the Case for Executive Privilege
Liberals on Capitol Hill have worked themselves into a frenzy over the U.S. attorneys firings. Their latest attack came earlier this week when Senate Judiciary Chairman Pat Leahy (D.-Vt.) issued subpoenas to the White House and Justice Department for documents related to the firings. President Bush has rightly declined to cooperate.
The Heritage Foundation’s Ed Meese weighed in on the use of executive privilege, and thinks Bush is well within in the law: “It is important that each president preserve the constitutional framework established by the Founders, so that no one branch is able to encroach on the authority of the others.”
