Republicans Should Be Sad to See Gilmore Go

Gov. Jim Gilmore, originally uploaded by Saint Anselm College.

I have a lot respect for Jim Gilmore. Back at CPAC in March, the Republican presidential candidate spent three days shaking hands and pleading his case to conservatives. No other major presidential candidate spent that kind of time among the attendees. At the time, I thought he would be rewarded for his effort. I was wrong.

It was at that moment I knew Gilmore wouldn’t stick around for long. The former Virginia governor called it quits yesterday, opting instead for another possible run for governor or a bid for the U.S. Senate if John Warner retires.

It’s unfortunate that Gilmore won’t be around. He had arguably the best conservative r√©sum√© of any candidate and was the one Republican to challenge the three front-runners on their deficiencies.

Gilmore also promised to be the first president to blog from the White House, saying he wouldn’t be afraid to use the new medium as a way to get the message out. I’m still waiting for someone else to say something as revolutionary.
