Senate Republicans Shine the Spotlight on Southwick

Leslie Southwick’s confirmation to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has lingered before the Senate since January. With no progress on the horizon, Senate Republicans and their conservative allies are making a full-court press today to highlight the Democrats’ delays.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel (R.-Ky.) made his second YouTube video (below) and the GOP’s communications shop is flooding reporters with information (sorry, no link). Meanwhile, liberal Sen. Arlen Specter (R.-Pa.) joined forces with conservative Sen. Jeff Sessions (R.-Ala.) at a press conference.

The messaging strategy has also trickled down to conservative groups such as Fidelis and Concerned Women for America, which are calling for Democrats to act on the Southwick’s nomination. This, of course, is welcome news to conservatives who want President Bush to leave a lasting legacy on the federal judiciary.
