College Newspapers Aren’t Adapting to New Media

Posted by: Rob Bluey In: Media

There’s an interesting piece on Inside Higher Ed about the failure of college newspapers to adapt to changes in technology. As a former college newspaper editor who tried to offer daily online coverage of news and sports way back in 1999, I’m simply amazed that this is a problem given the youth and talent at their disposal. Fortunately, my successors at The Ithacan have done a good job of adapting.

As your former Online Editor, I can’t agree more.

I spoke with Matt Quintanilla who’s currently running the Ithacan’s website a few weeks ago in DC, and he certainly seems to “get it” by keeping himself informed of trends and technology, and asking himself “how does this apply to what we do?”

That’s the key to success: be proactive in looking for change, don’t wait for a need to.

Come to think of it, Paul, you were the first online editor who understood what to do with all the information we produced. I’m pretty sure you were the first person to start putting it in a database or at least organizing it in a way that was easily searchable.

Just saw two helicopters flying over Thurmont, MD. I wonder if the Obamas are visiting Camp David?

@MelissaTweets Nope, I'm in Atlanta. Don't think there's a Chick-fil-A at Reagan.

Took a detour to terminal A. Nothing is better than a Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit for breakfast. http://yfrog.com/0vgjyj
