Three weeks ago I wrote about the phenomenal story of St. Louis Cardinal Rick Ankiel. The right fielder’s remarkable comeback had captivated me. Charles Krauthammer compared him to Roy Hobbs in “The Natural.”
Unfortunately for Ankiel and the Cardinals, the feel-good story of the summer could be a big bust. The New York Daily News reported today that Ankiel “received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004.” Questions surrounding Ankiel not only threaten his popularity, but also the Cardinals current streak.
As someone who bought into the Ankiel hype, I must admit I’m disappointed.
