My Family and Friends on Facebook

My wife finally joined Facebook yesterday after years of prodding from her early adopter husband. This gives me five family members on Facebook, including a sister-in-law, three cousins and now my wife. I’m turning my attention to my brother, who will be a much harder sell, even though he’s younger and has more real-life friends on Facebook than I do.

Speaking of friends, my former high school friends are using Facebook to organize a gathering this Wednesday in honor of Matt Larkin, who was killed in a tragic car accident several years ago. I wasn’t sure the event was going to take place this year, so I was naturally surprised to see it listed as an event on Facebook. Looking through the invite list was a great way to connect with old friends — many of whom I probably wouldn’t have found had they not been invited to the event.

All this activity over the past 24 hours gave me an opportunity to clean up my profile page, which had grown cluttered with applications that I rarely use. I owe thanks to Joe Mansour of the David All Group for his advice at last week’s Internet Activist School at the Leadership Institute. Joe spoke about social networking and gave some sound advice for Facebook users.
