Hillary Clinton won today’s Nevada caucuses, but the victory came at great expense. The Clinton campaign’s effort to suppress the vote in Las Vegas earlier this week was the ultimate form of hypocrisy. Any effort by the Clintons to allege voter disenfranchisement in the future should be dismissed out of hand.
Ever since the 2000 presidential election, Democrats have actively promoted the idea that Republicans win elections by voter disenfranchisement — keeping low-income citizens, minorities and seniors away from the polls. The GOP has struggled to rebut the allegations in the past, but they shouldn’t have that problem after the Clintons’ behavior in Nevada.
Former President Bill Clinton has given Republicans plenty of ammunition. His finger-waging behavior was laughable earlier in the week when he defended a lawsuit to shut down caucus locations in Las Vegas. Then yesterday Clinton lodged unsubstantiated accusations that he witnessed voter suppression in Nevada, doing his best to fuel suspicions that Barack Obama was cheating.
Conservatives shouldn’t let the Clintons forget this embarrassing episode. The Wall Street Journal’s John Fund wrote a wonderful piece Thursday outlining just how hypocritical it really was for a Democrat to attempt to disenfranchise voters when Democrats have for years accused Republicans of such tactics.
Congratulations on your victory, Hillary, and thanks for showing the world you’ll do whatever it takes to win, even if it it means acting like the ultimate hypocrite.
