Three congressional districts in Upstate New York switched from red to blue in 2006. You can add another to the list for 2008.
Rep. Jim Walsh announced his retirement today, setting up another challenging race for Republicans in New York’s 25th congressional district. Newcomer Dan Maffei, a liberal Democrat and former aide to Rep. Charlie Rangel, nearly knocked off Walsh in 2006. The moderate Republican survived, 51% to 49%, in a tough environment nationally for the GOP.
Apparently, Walsh wasn’t up for another fight. Maffei has already declared his candidacy and other Democrats are expected to jump in the race as well. As close as Maffei came to beating Walsh, I’m told some Democrats were underwhelmed by his campaign operation, feeling he should have pulled off the upset.
