Shutter Speed, Depth of Field and Doughnuts

Last week’s photo class assignment tested us on horizontal motion and depth of field, two areas that I always wanted to master but never knew how with the manual settings on my camera.

The shot above of was taken at a slow shutter speed (1/30) with an f/stop of 22, resulting in the blurred motion of the cars. There are more shots on Flickr showing the same picture with a fast shutter speed (1/800), freezing the passing cars in place.

A old book from 1997 that came with my film Nikon SLR served as a great guide for this assignment. Ironically, I didn’t get anything comparable to this book when I bought my digital camera.

Coincidentally, I also managed to compose this shot above using the rule of thirds, which happens to our next and final assignment.
