There’s no day more special to the city of Utica than Boilermaker Sunday. This year’s 15K road race took place yesterday with rain pouring on the runners right until the gun fired at 8 a.m. It was the first time in the race’s history that rain threatened to put a damper on the world’s best 15K road race. Fortunately, the clouds parted and the runners enjoyed a clear — albeit hot and humid — 9.3 miles of running.
Shortly before the race, my Dad, a runner in all 31 Boilermakers, was interviewed about his rare accomplishment by longtime newsman Joe Kelly on WUTR. There are only 17 people who have run every race, and there’s no telling when he will stop. Check out the video; he gives a great interview.
There is much more Boilermaker coverage from the Utica Observer-Dispatch, WKTV and WFXV/WUTR. For people who haven’t been to the race or the party afterward, it’s hard to understand how significant this event is to the Utica area. I certainly wish I could’ve been there. (Photos from last year.)
Special thanks to my friends Domenick Cecconi and Ryan Miller for sending me the link to the interview.
