Stop the EPA From Hijacking Economy

A couple months ago, my colleagues at The Heritage Foundation noticed a trend among liberals to influence decisions made by regulatory agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency. Left-wing groups and radical environmentalists were using a combination of email and postcards to dump thousands of comments on the EPA to sway opinion about its proposal to regulate carbon dioxide.

Agencies routinely ask citizens to share their opinion during a public comment period. A few free-market groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Americans for Prosperity were running their own campaigns through Capwiz, but we wanted to do something more creative and educational.

We launched StopEPA.com with the goal of making it easy for any American to share his or her thoughts about the EPA’s proposal. Because these regulations would impact not only U.S. corporations but also individuals who own lawnmowers or run small businesses, we saw an opportunity to both educate and activate concerned citizens.

With less than 10 days until the EPA stops accepting public comments, StopEPA.com has directed nearly 6,000 comments to the inboxes of government bureaucrats. We’ve had some fun in the process. Recognizing the wonkish nature of the regulations, a couple friends created this video. Enjoy it and remember to leave a comment.
