The Biggest Winner at CPAC: Ann Coulter

Filed under: CPAC 2007 — Rob Bluey @ 11:40 pm

I felt guilty not making it back to the Omni Shoreham today, but after spending the past hour scanning the blogs, I’m glad I stayed away. When you have eight presidential candidates in your presence but the top story is Ann Coulter, there’s something very wrong with the rightosphere.

Yesterday during her afternoon speech, Coulter delivered a zinger at John Edwards. Just as she outraged bloggers last year with remarks about Muslims, Coulter managed to top that performance by using the word “faggot” in the same sentence as John Edwards. Left, right or center, bloggers have spewed endless rants about evil Ann. Several bloggers have suggested Ann be dropped from the CPAC program in the future. I’m sorry, my friends, you may hate Ann, but she says these things for a reason: she’s trying to provoke a reaction.

That’s why she’s the real winner at the end of the day. Her popularity soars after every CPAC — because bloggers, commentators and politicians denounce her. That’s just who she is and what she does. Get used to it. She’s not going away.

Here’s a list of just some of the bloggers commenting on Ann. For a more complete list, Joe Gandelman at The Moderate Voice has a more extensive breakdown.

• Ace at Ace of Spades
• Scott Olin Schmidt at Boi From Troy
• Ed Morrissey at Captain’s Quarters (yesterday and today)
• Allahpundit and Bryan Preston at Hot Air
• Kevin McCullough at Musclehead Revolution (part 1 and post 2
• Hotline on Call
• Patrick Ishmael at News Buckit
• Noel Sheppard at NewsBusters
• James Joyner at Outside the Beltway
• Charmaine Yoest at Reasoned Audacity
• Alexander at Save The GOP
• Sean Hackbarth at The American Mind (post 1, post 2, post 3 and post 4)
• Dean Barnett and Hugh Hewitt at Townhall

  2. Unfortunately, John Edwards is using Coulter’s comment to raise $$$. It also really looks bad that vigorous clapping can be heard at CPAC, but no immediate outcry. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx9Bi3C4rs8&mode=related&search=)

  3. Sorry to disappoint the Very Serious Bloggers but a lot of us in the rank and file of conservatives thought Coulter’s remark was hilarious and right on target. I can certainly understand the politicians distancing themselves from it; they are, after all, politicians. But the elite bloggers? You have to wonder if they are getting a bit out of touch. After all, as you pointed out, the tape shows that the audience reaction was overwhelmingly favorable. Sure, the remarks was a little out of line, but hardly worthy of the handwringing and hanky sniffing going on over it among those on the right side of the aisle.

Maybe HER popularity soars, but she does nothing for those who surround her.

And if you haven’t noticed, it sounds like a number of conservatives DO think she should go away.

DaMav, are you happy with Coulter reinforcing the BS stereotype of conservatives as gay-haters? Are you happy that this is what CPAC will be remembered for this year?

  8. Yeah, But You All Do it Too!…

Normally, I wouldn’t waste time by writing about Ann Coulter, but the latest controversy is just too rich. No, I’m not surprised that Coulter called presidential candidate John Edwards a “faggot.” That’s mild compared to …

  9. Hilarious. Yes, keep Ann ranting, it’s a brilliant face for conservatism - an unstable woman who refuses to reason or admit any faults. I suspect she was regularly beaten as a child and I pity her. Do you really think she’s good for conservatives? You’ve got to be kidding.
