I can certainly understand the politicians distancing themselves from it; they are, after all, politicians. But the elite bloggers? You have to wonder if they are getting a bit out of touch. After all, as you pointed out, the tape shows that the audience reaction was overwhelmingly favorable. Sure, the remarks was a little out of line, but hardly worthy of the handwringing and hanky sniffing going on over it among those on the right side of the aisle.
