My good friend Matt Lewis at Townhall says this of the CPAC straw poll results:
Some people will tell you that Mitt Romney didn’t deserve to win (because he bussed in College Republicans to vote for him). That’s like saying George W. Bush didn’t deserve to win because he raised more money than his opponent. Romney’s ability to organize, inspire, and transport college students to the conference is precisely why he did deserve to win!
Matt and I think alike, but other bloggers are (in my opinion) unfairly criticizing Romney. Among them are Ed Morrissey of Captain’s Quarters and C. Jane Stewart of See Jane Mom. Meanwhile, Patrick Ruffini puts a pro-Giuliani spin on the results and Erick Erickson of RedState sees the results as confirmation that the race will come down to Rudy vs. Romney. Sean Hackbarth at The American Mind seems to agree. Ace at Ace of Spades also recaps the straw poll.
I felt guilty not making it back to the Omni Shoreham today, but after spending the past hour scanning the blogs, I’m glad I stayed away. When you have eight presidential candidates in your presence but the top story is Ann Coulter, there’s something very wrong with the rightosphere.
Yesterday during her afternoon speech, Coulter delivered a zinger at John Edwards. Just as she outraged bloggers last year with remarks about Muslims, Coulter managed to top that performance by using the word “faggot” in the same sentence as John Edwards. Left, right or center, bloggers have spewed endless rants about evil Ann. Several bloggers have suggested Ann be dropped from the CPAC program in the future. I’m sorry, my friends, you may hate Ann, but she says these things for a reason: she’s trying to provoke a reaction.
That’s why she’s the real winner at the end of the day. Her popularity soars after every CPAC — because bloggers, commentators and politicians denounce her. That’s just who she is and what she does. Get used to it. She’s not going away.
Here’s a list of just some of the bloggers commenting on Ann. For a more complete list, Joe Gandelman at The Moderate Voice has a more extensive breakdown.
I decided to skip the Saturday session of CPAC to go to the Georgetown Hoyas basketball game. They’re playing UConn today in the final game of the regular season. I’ll have a complete recap of the day’s events this evening.
I’ve been so busy with my panel discussion that I’ve had little time to blog about the presidential candidates at CPAC. Here’s a blog breakdown of the presidential candidates at CPAC. We’re waiting for Mitt Romney to finish his speech, hence the lack of coverage. Stayed tuned for an update.
Today on Bloggers Row, I’m sitting next to Scott Olin Schmidt of Boi From Troy and Spot-on. He pointed me to this video from NBC4 in Los Angeles. Also, don’t miss his weekly Spot-on column about CPAC.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich spent a few minutes with bloggers this morning. In the above photo, Ed Morrissey of Captain’s Quarters hears Newt’s pitch. More photos on Flickr.
Liz Mair of GOPProgress.com files a report on the first day at CPAC. I didn’t see Liz on Bloggers’ Row, but it’s nice to know she cares about us conservatives.
I was fortunate to score a seat at the Shirley & Banister table for tonight’s presidential dinner at CPAC. (Thanks, Joe Turman.) I’ve filed a complete report on Bluey Blog.
Many bloggers decided to skip the event. Some were just too tired, while others lacked adequate attire. No one showed up in pajamas today, but they weren’t all as well dressed as Scott Olin Schmidt.
Scott Olin Schmidt of Boi From Troy and N.Z. Bear of Victory Caucus have the distinction of traveling the farthest for CPAC. Scott lives in West Hollywood and N.Z. hails from Orange County.
If James Joyner was the busiest blogger at CPAC today, then Michelle Malkin was clearly the most popular. She has a booth at CPAC for Hot Air and joined us this afternoon on Bloggers’ Row. I don’t imagine she got much work done, however, given all people asking to pose for pictures and introduce themselves.
UPDATE — 11:43 p.m.: Michelle has her Day 1 recap posted. Thanks for the link love!
Danny Glover at AirCongress posts a “welcome video” for Rudy Giuliani, who will speak at CPAC tomorrow. Although Danny’s not here with us, he has his finger on the pulse of what’s happening.
I’m sitting two seats down from James Joyner of Outside the Beltway, and he’s been on a roll today. Not only is his the wittiest blogger, but also the busiest. This afternoon he’s weighed in on longshot presidential candidates Susan Ducey and John Cox, Michelle Malkin’s star power and reflections on Stephen Glass, 10 years after he fabricated a story about CPAC.
I’m sitting next to Justin Hart of My Man Mitt, pictured in this photo with Flipper, the anti-Romney dolphin. Justin insists he won this fight, even though it looks like the dolphin is about to swallow his camera. Not true, says Justin, who has the video here.
